Pulau Batu Berlayar

Two giant granite slabs leaning in parallel atop a tiny rocky islet. Exactly like ship sails billowing in the wind. One of the most dramatic rock formations in Southeast Asia.

Two granite rocks as tall as a three-story building, leaning at nearly the same angle, on top of a tiny rocky islet. There is no more complicated explanation than that. This formation took tens of millions of years to form, as water seeped into natural cracks in the granite and slowly split it apart. Now, both slabs stand like eternal ship sails, one of the most photographed sights in all of Belitung's waters.

The stop here is usually brief. The boat circles the island once or twice, everyone is busy with cameras, fifteen or twenty minutes later the journey continues. Yet almost all of our guests keep their Batu Berlayar photos as their favorite memory. There is something about the silhouette of those two leaning rocks that cannot be explained. Maybe because the shape is too perfect to be natural. Maybe because every angle produces a good photo. We do not know exactly why. We only know that nobody has ever been disappointed.
