The morning starts with Mie Belitung Atep, a bowl of yellow noodles in thick, savory shrimp broth served with potato, tofu, cucumber, and prawn crackers. Add a glass of freshly squeezed Jeruk Kunci lime ice tea and you are ready to go. From Tanjung Kelayang harbor, our private boat takes you to Pulau Pasir, a sandbar that surfaces only at low tide and draws starfish by the dozen; then to Pulau Lengkuas, where a Dutch-built lighthouse from 1882 still guides ships today; past Batu Berlayar, two massive granite slabs leaning together like the sails of a stone ship; and finally to Tanjung Tinggi, the white-sand beach with towering granite boulders that served as a filming location for the 2008 Laskar Pelangi film.

GoPro and mirrorless cameras come with the trip. Our local guides know the best angles at each island and the time of day when the light is at its peak. You do not need to think about a thing. Just show up, enjoy it, and come back with photos worth keeping.
