SD Muhammadiyah Gantung

A replica of the wooden school where Andrea Hirata learned to read and write. From these simple benches came the novel Laskar Pelangi, now translated into more than 40 languages.

This white and blue wooden building looks ordinary from the outside. But inside there is a story that changed how Indonesia sees education. This is where a young Andrea Hirata sat on a long wooden bench, stared at a chalk blackboard, and started dreaming. He was the son of a poor tin miner. His school was falling apart. But from this place came Laskar Pelangi, a novel that sold over five million copies in Indonesia, was adapted into a film by Riri Riza in 2008, and has been translated into dozens of languages worldwide.

The classroom inside is reconstructed as it was. Worn wooden desks, a green blackboard with traces of chalk, glassless windows that let the breeze through. Outside, a wide yard framed by coconut palms under the broad blue skies of East Belitung. Bring your children here. Let them sit on the same bench where a poor child decided his dreams were bigger than his island. We cannot promise they will become famous writers. But we believe they will go home with a new understanding of how far education can take someone.
