Tanjung Tinggi
Hundreds of giant granite boulders scattered across white sand, forming natural corridors and pools. The filming location for Laskar Pelangi and the best sunset spot in Belitung.
Imagine clean, soft white sand, and then giant granite boulders scattered everywhere. Some the size of cars, some as tall as two-story houses. Between the rocks, shallow seawater forms natural pools that are calm and safe for children to play in. This place is the result of geological processes spanning hundreds of millions of years, but you do not need to know any of that to enjoy it. Just come and feel it for yourself.
Tanjung Tinggi became famous after Andrea Hirata chose it for the 2008 film adaptation of Laskar Pelangi. The scene of children running among granite boulders was seen by millions of eyes around the world. But film cannot capture the smell: a mix of sea salt, sun-warmed sand, and a faint mossy scent on the rock surfaces. Come in the late afternoon, around half past five. Find the tallest boulder, sit on top, let your feet dangle. Wait until the western sky turns deep orange and reflects off the wet granite. That half hour is worth your entire trip to Belitung.
