Danau Kaolin

A former kaolin mine filled with rainwater, now a bright turquoise lake. The chalk-white earth around it creates a contrast that makes this place look like a sci-fi film set.

This place used to be a kaolin mine. The white clay mineral used for ceramics, cosmetics, and paper was mined here for years. When the mine was abandoned, tropical rain filled the pit, and the mineral-rich water turned into an unusual turquoise blue. The edges are chalk-white, no plants grow there. The contrast is harsh and strange, and that is exactly why this place is so striking.

Best time to visit is morning, before the sun gets too high. The lake surface is still as glass. Clouds and blue sky reflect perfectly on top. You cannot swim here because of the mineral content, so it is more of a photo spot. Wear bright clothes, red or yellow, and stand at that white edge. The colors at Kaolin Lake are so dramatic that even a regular phone camera produces images that look heavily edited. They are not.
